In the Netherlands, flowers are part of everyday life. They are purchased not only for special occasions, but also for home decoration, casual gifting, and spontaneous moments.
Despite strong demand, traditional flower shops face structural limitations:
To address these challenges, a flower retail operator partnered with a high-end shopping center in Amstelveen and multiple Esso fuel stations to test a new retail model: 24/7 smart flower vending machines placed directly where demand naturally occurs.

The goal of this deployment was not to replace traditional flower shops, but to extend sales beyond store hours and capture incremental demand in locations where customers already pass through daily.
Specifically, the client aimed to:
During the planning phase, the client defined several non-negotiable requirements:
The machine was expected to deliver not just flowers, but convenience and confidence for customers.
To meet these requirements, a high-end smart floral vending machine was installed at selected shopping center entrances and Esso fuel station locations.
The machines feature a panoramic glass display with custom lighting, making bouquets clearly visible day and night. Branding and lighting were adapted to match each location, ensuring the machine complemented its surroundings rather than standing out awkwardly.
The internal structure was designed for bucket-based storage, allowing large bouquets to remain upright and visually appealing. Modular compartments made it possible to adjust layout during peak seasons such as Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day.
A dedicated floral preservation system maintains consistent temperature and humidity. Controlled airflow minimizes condensation and dehydration, helping flowers retain freshness longer and reducing daily waste.
Each bouquet is tracked individually. When a preset freshness limit is reached, the system automatically blocks the item from sale. This prevents expired products from being purchased and protects customer trust.
Operators monitor inventory levels, sales data, temperature status, and system alerts remotely. This reduces manual checks and allows timely restocking only when necessary.
After installation, the client observed several tangible outcomes:
Importantly, the machines did not cannibalize in-store sales. Instead, they created incremental revenue from customers who would otherwise leave empty-handed.
This case demonstrates why flower vending machines are increasingly effective in the Dutch market:
By placing machines in shopping centers and fuel stations, flower retailers meet customers exactly where and when the need arises.
For this project, we supported the client with a full turnkey solution, including:
This customer case from the Netherlands shows how smart flower vending machines can successfully extend traditional flower retail without increasing operational burden.
By combining premium presentation, precise freshness control, and digital management, flower shops gain a scalable way to sell flowers anytime, anywhere, while maintaining quality and brand integrity.
